Case Study

Removing material during the construction of a signalling yard

Case / Project Summary

Industry:

Infrastructure & Civil Engineering, Logistics & Transport

Client:

National Rail Contractor

Location:

North-West UK

Overview:

DHI were instructed by a national rail contractor to assist in removing ground materials during the construction of a signalling yard.

The project involved managing significant volumes of both hazardous and non-hazardous soils within a live infrastructure environment, with tight programme demands and strict environmental regulations.

DHI coordinated the excavation and removal of 11,500 tonnes of hazardous soil, maintaining an average of 80 loads per day to keep the project on schedule. All hazardous materials were transported to licensed treatment facilities, ensuring full compliance while diverting waste from landfill.

A further 6,000 tonnes of non-hazardous soil was also removed and managed appropriately, supporting efficient site progression.

Result:

By prioritising treatment over disposal, DHI delivered a cost saving of £750,000 to the client compared to traditional landfill routes. The approach also significantly reduced environmental impact through landfill diversion and sustainable waste management practices.
